Are universities mostly sorting devices to separate smart and hard-working high school students from their less-able fellows so that employers can more easily identify them? Are universities factories for the dissemination of job skills?
In Midwood, Brooklyn, there’s a luxury kosher grocery store called Pomegranate serving the modern Orthodox and Hasidic communities. It looks like a really nice Whole Foods. There’s a wide selection of kosher cheeses from Italy and France, wasabi herring, gluten-free ritual foods and nicely toned wood flooring.
Westerners tend to define learning cognitively while Asians tend to define it morally. Westerners tend to see learning as something people do in order to understand and master the external world. Asians tend to see learning as an arduous process they undertake in order to cultivate virtues inside the self.
Chuck Hagel has been nominated to supervise the beginning of a generation-long process of defense cutbacks. All the charges about Hagel’s views on Israel or Iran are secondary. The real question is, how will Hagel supervise the beginning of America’s military decline?
Let’s just look at one segment, Asian-Americans. Many of these people are leading the lives Republicans celebrate. They are, disproportionately, entrepreneurial, industrious and family-oriented. But on Tuesday, Asian-Americans rejected the Republican Party by 3 to 1. They don’t relate to the Republican equation that more government equals less work.
I call on voters to support the Republican Party because that party is most likely to stand for states’ rights, a free market economy, individual initiative, sensible environmental conservation, proper use of military force and opposition to cap-and-trade.
