In 2010, an 11 percent drop in violent crime and a 5 percent dip in property crime helped push the total number of crimes reported to the Grand Forks Police Department to a 10-year low, according to statistics released Tuesday.

Study: Domestic violence protective orders less effective in rural areas Laura is from a small town in a sparsely populated county in northeastern North Dakota, and after years of physical and emotional abuse, she sought and obtained a series of protection orders against her husband. Her experience illustrates some of the added difficulties that may face victims of domestic violence who live in rural areas, including distance from advocates and police and other barriers stemming from the nature of rural society.
