Vyrn Muir took over as head coach at Grand Forks Red River in the fall of 2004. He didn’t win a game that first season. In the 2004 Cushman Classic, Grand Forks Central’s Ryan Chappell ran wild on the Roughriders in a game the Knights led 40-0 at halftime.

PREP FOOTBALL: Red River trounces Central in Cushman Classic
Grand Forks Red River just had too many options. Red River High School’s football team used its offensive balance to roll past Grand Forks Central 42-7 on Friday in the annual Cushman Classic. The East Region opener for both teams improved Red River to 3-0 while dropping Central to 0-3.

Crosstown crushdown: Red River dominates Cushman Classic
When Grand Forks Central’s defense started stacking the line, Taylor Steen took it as a challenge. The Grand Forks Red River senior erupted with his biggest passing game of the high school football season Friday. Steen threw for 226 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Roughriders to a 40-13 win against Central in the annual Cushman Classic.

“A typical Cushman Classic is cold and wet, isn’t it?” Salquist said.

Letter to the youth of Grand Forks
On Sept. 17, 1964, the Herald published the following letter by former Grand Forks Central High School athlete and hometown hero Cliff Cushman. It became one of the best-known pieces that ever ran in the paper and has been reprinted and memorialized in countless newspapers and other publications since.

The Grand Forks high school football game between Red River and Central is the 13th installment of the Cushman Classic.
But this game has a bit more meaning than that. It was 43 years ago when Maj. Cliff Cushman’s fighter plane was shot down northeast of Hanoi, Vietnam.

That’s because winning is something that has eluded the Roughriders since 2001, when Drew Thomas ran for 274 yards to beat the Knights. Since, Central has won seven straight times.
