A thin film of oil spread from the Costa Concordia cruise ship as waves battered its wreckage off Italy's coast today, adding to fears of an environmental disaster in the area's sensitive, pristine waters.
Italy's Civil Protection agency said today that technical studies indicated the deformed hull of the ship created too many safety concerns to continue the search within it. Relatives of the missing and diplomatic officials representing their countries have been informed of the decision, it said in a statement.

The chief executive of the company that owns the Costa Concordia cruise ship says the captain who grounded it off the coast of Tuscany did not relay correct information to the company or the crew after the vessel hit rocks.
