Big changes are coming in how a fourth of all Minnesotans get health insurance as the state rushes to build a new kind of marketplace that will help about 1.3 million people choose their best coverage options.
Only 111 flood insurance policies have been sold in Duluth, according to Kris Eide, director of the Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management office. “Who would think, when you live on a hill, you need flood insurance?” she said.
The Minnesota Department of Human Services outlined a plan Friday to maintain health insurance for more than 30,000 low-income adults whose coverage runs out March 1, by moving them from one state program into another. Commissioner Cal Ludeman said the agency will automatically transfer 28,000 people from the General Assistance Medical Care program into MinnesotaCare, a bigger subsidized plan for the working poor. Another 8,000 GAMC enrollees already are switching or dropping coverage.

The lively crowd gathered for U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann’s health care town hall forum turned feisty at times, drowning out speakers with applause and boos. Bachmann’s Thursday afternoon forum drew several hundred people, who packed a roughly 420-seat school auditorium. A couple of hundred more watched by video from the cafeteria. Bachmann’s staff said there was room for 800 people.
