When North Dakota State athletic director Gene Taylor first heard the dollar amount that the University of Wyoming was offering a head coach, he knew there would be no chance for the Bison to match it. So Taylor didn’t even try.
Tuesday is the application deadline for search to find the next UND football coach. But it’s still too early to determine when UND’s next coach will be hired. In its job description, UND said the application deadline is Tuesday but the position will remain open until filled.
North Dakota State athletic director Gene Taylor said Sunday afternoon that Craig Bohl will coach the NDSU football team the rest of the season, capping an emotional, topsy-turvy weekend that will rival any in Bison football history for drama.
When it comes to North Dakota State University football, weather is a nonissue for tailgater Craig Mitchell. Although temperatures hovered at about 16 below zero Saturday morning, the frigid conditions didn’t deter Mitchell and his crew of Bison fans from tailgating for the home playoff game against Furman.
The list of applicants to become UND’s next head football coach grew again Tuesday, a week before the application deadline. UND has received 41 applications to take over the position held by Chris Mussman for the past six seasons.
The season at one point was heading south when Furman was 2-4 with injuries mounting. Once October rolled around, the Paladins started heading north. And they haven’t stopped. It’s to the point this week that they are traveling way north — the team from Greenville, S.C., will play at North Dakota State on Saturday in the second round of the FCS playoffs.
The North Dakota State football coaches took a poll of sorts last week on their best guess to which NDSU’s opponent on Saturday would be: Furman College (S.C.) or South Carolina State. The result was unanimous with Furman. The coaches were right.
The second season for the North Dakota State football team started on Sunday with a not-so-surprising announcement from the NCAA. The Bison were tabbed as the No. 1 overall seed in the Division I FCS playoffs.
