With several swipes from the arm of an excavator and a smattering of applause from spectators, demolition began Wednesday morning on the Cleveland house where three women were held captive and raped over a decade.
The man accused of holding three women captive for a decade in his home terrorized the mother of his children, frequently beating her, playing twisted psychological games and locking her indoors in the years before their relationship disintegrated, her relatives say.
After three women who vanished a decade ago were found captive Monday at the run-down house, Cleveland police are facing questions for the second time in four years about their handling of missing-person cases and are conducting an internal review to see if they overlooked anything.

Denying he ran an Amish cult, the 67-year-old ringleader of hair- and beard-cutting attacks on fellow members of his faith in Ohio was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison, while family members convicted of carrying out his orders got one to seven years.
An Ohio sex offender was convicted today of killing all 11 women whose remains were found in his home and buried in his backyard, bringing closure to a case that horrified the city of Cleveland. Anthony Sowell, 51, was convicted of aggravated murder, kidnapping, tampering with evidence and abuse of a human corpse in the 11 deaths. He now faces the death penalty.

The 2011 class for the Cleveland hall was revealed: Neil Diamond, whose hits include "Cherry Cherry" and "Sweet Caroline," along with the Alice Cooper Band, New Orleans musician Dr. John, Darlene Love and singer-songwriter Tom Waits. Those left out include Bon Jovi, LL Cool J., the Beastie Boys and the J. Geils Band.

The head of a NASA research center in Cleveland says it was locked down because of false reports of a gunman and that the report originated from an emergency notification test done at another of the space agency's centers.
Former President Jimmy Carter, on a trip promoting his new book, developed an upset stomach on a flight to Cleveland today and was taken to a hospital, officials said. But Carter's grandson, Georgia state Sen. Jason Carter, said his 85-year-old grandfather was doing fine.
