The cereal tinkerers who invented Cheerios 71 years ago needed only one variety, the yellow-box original that remains a staple of American breakfast tables.
They would barely recognize what their humble oat concoction has become.
General Mills gave a peek at some of the products it will introduce in 2012, a lineup that includes Dulce de Leche Cheerios and peanut-butter flavored Multi Grain Cheerios. The Golden Valley-based food maker said today that it plans to launch about 50 new products in the first half of 2012. Among them: a lactose-free version of Yoplait yogurt.
The Minnesota maker of Cheerios cereal and Yoplait yogurt posted a 15 percent higher profit for its fiscal third quarter on lower commodity costs and rising sales boosted by a sharp increase in marketing spending.
The Golden Valley, Minn.-based company says earnings surged to $358.8 million, or $1.07 per share, for the three months ended May 31. That compares with $185.2 million, or 53 cents per share, a year ago.
