The movement by U.S. food corporations toward more humane treatment of animals experienced a whopper of a shift Wednesday when Burger King announced that all of its eggs and pork will come from cage-free chickens and pigs by 2017.

Restaurant chains and beef processors defended their products’ safety Thursday after a report that an ammonia treatment thought to kill harmful germs in meat isn’t as effective as the industry and regulators believed. The New York Times reported Thursday, citing government and industry records, that E. coli and salmonella were found dozens of times in testing for the federal school lunch program on ammonia-treated beef from Beef Products Inc. The meat was not served.

An 18-year-old man was shot and killed and a teenager was injured after a fight broke out outside a Minneapolis Burger King. Minneapolis police said they were called to the scene when the fight broke out about 2 p.m. Sunday at the restaurant on the city’s north side. There were no arrests immediately after the shooting, but police said there were many witnesses.

Fargo police: No armed robbery took place at city Burger King
After investigation, police determined there was no robbery, said Fargo Sgt. Glen Hanson. The man was arrested with a toy gun and also had marijuana in his possession, he said.
