Supporters of Heroes of Hope will make their inaugural walk next Saturday to raise money for brain cancer research.
Karla Miller, Grand Forks, organized the first-ever Heroes of Hope walk in Grand Forks to help raise money for brain cancer research. Mike Miller, her husband, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor on June 3, 2009. Mike Miller along with Matt Malm and Rachel Lund, also of Grand Forks, have been chosen as local heroes for the May 15 walk and will head teams. Malm and Lund, like Miller, have been diagnosed with malignant brain tumors.
Walking into a packed waiting room at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, PJ Lukac delivered the unthinkable news to his parents: “I’m going to die.”
He had suffered periods of confusion and other symptoms, so his mother had insisted that he get a neurological scan at Northwestern. “I thought it was going to be a waste of money,” he said.
Dr. Paul Grabb said he operated on Sam Esquibel at Memorial Hospital for Children in Colorado Springs, Colo., after an MRI showed a microscopic tumor on the newborn's brain. Sam was 3 days old and otherwise healthy. Grabb said that while removing the growth, he discovered it contained a nearly perfect foot and the formation of another foot, a hand and a thigh.
