A husband and wife from Pine City have been killed in a head-on crash in eastern Minnesota near the Wisconsin border. Minnesota State Patrol Capt. Matt Langer said a 44-year-old-man who had been drinking tried to pass a minivan on Highway 70 in Rock Creek in a no-passing zone about 5:45 p.m. Friday.

North Dakota officials revisit bovine TB issue 
North Dakota is revisiting restrictions it placed on cattle imports from Minnesota nearly two years ago after bovine tuberculosis was detected in deer and cattle herds there, a state official said.
North Dakota’s Board of Animal Health asked state Veterinarian Dr. Susan Keller to meet with wildlife officials from both states to discuss the restrictions and gather information.

Bovine TB creates more hassles than losses for cattle ranchers 
Nebraska and Texas are investigating positive cases of bovine tuberculosis to determine whether there has been an outbreak of the disease already confirmed in California, Minnesota (where it was found in northwest Minnesota), Michigan and New Mexico. The disease is considered untreatable in cattle, so both infected and uninfected animals in a herd usually are killed when bovine tuberculosis is found.

The number of Nebraska cattle herds quarantined because of bovine tuberculosis concerns jumped to 42 Tuesday, and two other states were warned the disease may have already spread there.

N.D. cow tests negative for bovine TB 
State Veterinarian Susan Keller says the last of 28 suspect cows in initial testing of a southwestern North Dakota beef cattle herd has tested negative for bovine tuberculosis. Further tests still need to be done on a 29th suspect cow found in a second round of tests. Testing of neighboring herds also is ongoing. No bovine TB has been found in any of the tests so far.

Minnesota senators hear bovine TB fight saved cattle industry 
Minnesota senators smiled Thursday when they heard about one of the few bright spots in the 2009 legislative session. In a time when lawmakers must deal with a massive budget deficit affecting nearly every state program, Sen. Rod Skoe said it was good to hear that an aggressive state-run effort saved the state’s cattle industry.
