Altru Health System plans to issue $130 million in bonds to pay for expansion plans and refinance older debt. The Grand Forks City Council Finance and Development Committee took the initial step at its Monday meeting toward scheduling a public hearing on the bond issuance.
One of the bonds is worth $4.2 million, paying for dike improvements. It’ll be repaid by special assessments, a kind of property tax. The other bond is worth $4.8 million, paying for various projects from street paving to street lights. Special assessments will also pay off the debt.

The Glyndon Democrat considers current construction costs a bargain because they are 15 percent to 20 percent lower than normal. Given that, he said Thursday, the state should invest nearly $1 billion in construction projects across Minnesota.

A crash between a car and a school bus carrying the Ely High School football team led officials to cancel Friday night’s homecoming game and dance at Onamia High School. The State Patrol said the crash happened on U.S. Highway 169 in Coleraine about 3:30 p.m.
