North Dakota legislators are working feverishly to pull funding (HB 1353) so that this disease can run amok, unchecked and untreated like it has since the original tobacco companies imported slave labor to harvest tobacco crops.
I urge Herald readers to call their legislators, let them know that every vote does count and 162,774 of those votes wanted this money designated for tobacco prevention. Tell them not to support HB 1353.
In the time it has before the 2011 legislative session, the North Dakota University System should prepare persuasive answers to Rep. Mark Dosch’s questions. That’s because Dosch is not alone. Among key legislators, in fact, his skepticism is widespread. Higher ed leaders must figure out why and what it would take to bring Dosch and others around.
