A bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday would block a proposal to charge a border-crossing fee for Canadians entering the United States – a fee that one Fargo-Moorhead tourism official said would encourage Canadians who shop here to stay home.

A lawmaker who helped negotiate a bipartisan bill to overhaul immigration predicted on Sunday that comprehensive legislation would overwhelmingly pass the Senate by July 4 while House Republicans cautioned that they would write their own version, one piece at a time.
Minnesota's House and Senate convened Saturday for votes on major pieces of the state budget, including a likely House vote on a nearly $16 billion school funding bill that's been one of the chief priorities for Democrats running things at the Capitol.
Minnesota schools would be forced to adopt policies against bullying under a bill Minnesota representatives passed 72-57 Monday night.
“Every kid deserves to wake up in the morning ... and go to a school they are excited to go to,” Rep. Jim Davnie, DFL-Minneapolis, said.
The Senate sided with traditional retailers and financially strapped state and local governments Monday by passing a bill that would widely subject online shopping — for many a largely tax-free frontier — to state sales taxes.
