As UND’s first season in the Big Sky Conference winds down, UND coaches and athletes have learned they have some catching up to do on the field.
But UND has some catching up to do off the field, too — a change that takes place at the bank.
MISSOULA, Mont. — Montana is virtually unbeatable at home.
The Grizzlies outlasted rival Weber State 67-64 on Saturday night to win the Big Sky Conference postseason tournament before more than 7,100 fans at Dahlberg Arena.
UND will wrap up its first season in the Big Sky Conference this afternoon against a familiar opponent — Northern Colorado. North Dakota doesn’t have much history with the 11 other teams in the league, but Northern Colorado, a former conference opponent in the North Central Conference, is the exception. Nobody knows that more than UND defensive coordinator and associate head coach Mike Mannausau.
Shaun McClain’s 46-yard field goal with 3:43 left in the game proved to be the difference as Weber State held off Southern Utah 24-22 for its first victory of the season on Saturday in Cedar City, Utah.
Defensive tackle Zach Minter returned an interception 5 yards to the 1 to set up Tray Robinson’s go-ahead touchdown run in undefeated Montana State’s 48-41 victory over UC Davis on Saturday night in Davis, Calif.
Tonight’s UND-Cal Poly football game at the Alerus Center won’t make or break the season for either team.
But the winner can look ahead — just a quick peak, really — toward the possibility of postseason play.
UND took a big step forward last week, beating Sacramento State in the program’s first official Big Sky Conference football game.
On Saturday, UND can take a big leap forward — one that could put the Green and White in decent shape to make a run at the league title.
UND’s quarterback situation one game into the season appeared to be shaky at best. Its No. 1 quarterback, North Carolina transfer Braden Hanson, went down with a broken bone in his leg in the opener. The backup, Marcus Hendrickson, didn’t throw a pass last season.
