The longtime auditor in southeastern North Dakota's Barnes County is stepping down due to illness. Ed McGough tells KOVC radio that he has been battling a blood infection related to kidney stones. He says his condition improved earlier this year but the illness has returned.
Superintendent Doug Jacobson said the district has formed a building authority to sell bonds to finance the $14.5 million project. The authority will lease the school to the district and use the payments to pay off the bonds.
A sex offender who led police on a 22-hour search this fall in a cornfield in Barnes County after fleeing a private prison transport van pleaded guilty to a felony escape charge this morning. Joseph Megna, who was being extradited to the state of Washington on Oct. 4 when he escaped the van and sparked a search that cost more than $91,000, was sentenced in Barnes County District Court to the three months in jail he’s already served.
Mayor Bob Werkhoven and a city commissioner are the targets of the recall election Jan. 24 that is part of political turmoil that has plagued the city of 6,600 people all year. Former Valley City police chief Dean Ross is running for Werkhoven's seat.
