The Tommies’ girls basketball team enters the week with a 15-2 record and facing a North Dakota District 3 showdown. Thompson hosts Hillsboro-Central Valley (14-3) on Tuesday with the top seed in the district tournament on the line.
First Hillsboro-Central Valley clinched the top seed in the upcoming North Dakota Class B District 3 boys high school basketball tournament. Then the Burros assured themselves a sub-.500 record for the regular season.
“It’s been kind of a crazy year,” H-CV coach Elliot Rotvold said.
More than 12 seasons have passed since Warroad and Roseau went their separate ways in boys hockey classifications. Warroad has built a rivalry in Section 8A with Thief River Falls. Roseau’s key matchup in Section 8AA is with Moorhead.
Kyle Petersburg no longer will be overshadowed in his own offense.
The senior rushed for 1,230 yards in 2011, averaging 5.9 yards per carry and 102.5 yards per game. He was the main ballcarrier for Kittson County Central, the Minnesota Section 8 9-man champion. But that offense was highlighted by two seniors, quarterback Zach Rynning (2,010 passing yards) and receiver Derek Coffield (968 yards receiving, 313 yards rushing).
The size advantage for Thief River Falls isn’t in enrollment. It’s the tale of the tape.
Thief River Falls should be one of the favorites at the 29th annual Northwest Russ Smith Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament, which runs Tuesday through Thursday in Thief River Falls.
