The hype for the latest trade agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, has begun, and with no surprises: It’s basically the same propaganda we’ve been getting since NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement.
A new and legally binding international treaty to reduce harmful emissions of mercury was adopted Saturday by more than 140 nations, capping four years of difficult negotiations but stopping short of some of the tougher measures that proponents had envisioned.
Many predict that the Minnesota governor candidates in the Legislature, including House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher who more than anyone can affect the tone of the session, will want to get out early and hit the campaign trail. On the other hand, some Capitol insiders claim that the candidates will feel they can get more free publicity by filibustering at the Legislature, so the crowded race actually could prolong the session.
