While a nearly silent, black-and-white throwback film to old Hollywood won best picture at Sunday's Academy Awards, after-parties around town celebrated present day Hollywood with explosions of color, conversation, pounding music and pure glee.

The 1942 Oscar was thought to be lost for decades. It surfaced in 1994 when cinematographer Gary Graver tried to sell it. The sale was stopped by Beatrice Welles, Orson's youngest daughter and sole heir.
Eight-time Oscar host Billy Crystal will step back into the toughest job in show business, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Thursday. The appointment of Crystal, 63, came just a day after Eddie Murphy stepped down as master of ceremonies.

The group that oversees the Academy Awards is under new management. Dawn Hudson, former head of a top independent-film organization, has been named chief executive officer of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Longtime academy executive Ric Robertson was chosen as the group's chief operating officer.
Comedian-actor Billy Crystal, the eight-time Academy Awards host, said he was moved by his warm reception at last month's ceremony and that "it might be fun" to host the show again. But, he added, "I think the show needs to change" first.
These were supposed to be the younger, hipper Academy Awards, the ones that shook up the ceremony's conventions with popular, great-looking emcees in actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway, who were unlike the middle-aged comedians and TV talk-show hosts of years past.
“The King’s Speech” was crowned best picture Sunday at an Academy Awards ceremony as precise as a state coronation, the monarchy drama leading as expected with four Oscars and predictable favorites claiming acting honors.
