IT'S SIMPLY GRAND! What do we do now?
It has been a busy summer in the Grand Cities; school has started and the UND students have all moved back, and we are on the heels of a fabulous Grand Forks weekend with the first-ever Rollin' on the... Posted on 8/31/11 at 12:07 PM
It was bitterly cold outside the other night at my lake cabin, my reluctance to close it up for the winter now edging into the second week of December. Outside, great pillows of snow adorned the cluster of needles on the pine trees.
The UND women’s hockey team took a big step toward the NCAA tournament on Friday afternoon. Even though it’s still three months until the bracket will be picked, UND’s 2-1 win over No. 6 Clarkson figures to pay big dividends at that time.
UND used two goals by freshman Luke Johnson, one by senior Derek Rodwell and an outstanding performance by goaltender Zane Gothberg to earn an 3-2 victory over Western Michigan in front of 3,110 lively fans at the Lawson Ice Center.
UND men’s basketball coach Brian Jones has been in Hinkle Fieldhouse a number times during his time at Iowa. Hinkle is the home to Butler and it’s also where the movie Hoosiers was filmed. It’s a special place, he said. The fans are knowledgeable and passionate.
Winning faceoffs is not a concern Dave Hakstol has had in a while. Thanks to players such as Corban Knight, Brad Malone, Chris VandeVelde, T.J. Oshie, Jonathan Toews, Travis Zajac and Zach Parise, UND has ranked near the top nationally in that category each year in the last decade. But this season, that dominant center is not there yet.
It will be a busy holiday season for the UND athletic department. UND now has two high-profile coaching positions to fill with the resignation of volleyball coach Ashley Hardee on Wednesday afternoon. UND already is searching for a head football coach to replace Chris Mussman, who was let go last month.
UND’s mission this week is to break a three-game losing streak. If that happens, UND will have to snap the streak against one of the country’s top programs and in one of the more historic venues in all of college basketball.
UND volleyball coach Ashley Hardee submitted his resignation on Wednesday, according to a release from the school. The resignation comes as Hardee is being investigated for a reported hit-and-run accident early Sunday morning while the team was in Portland, Ore., at the Big Sky tournament.
The list of applicants to become UND’s next head football coach grew again Tuesday, a week before the application deadline. UND has received 41 applications to take over the position held by Chris Mussman for the past six seasons.
