Sioux-Bison football rivalry renewal tentatively set for 2015 and 2017

The heated rivalry between the UND and North Dakota State football teams has been on hold since 2003. The nine-year drought appears to have an end in sight.

UND FOOTBALL: 'The whole game has changed' for honorary coach, former UND player Dave Osborn

Times were different when Dave Osborn played football at UND. “We played outside on grass and in small stadiums,” Osborn said. “Now, you play in beautiful facilities like this one.” The beautiful facility Osborn talked about was the Alerus Center, where he served as an honorary coach during UND’s annual Green-White spring football game Saturday. “The whole game has changed,” he said.

UND FOOTBALL: Green takes down White squad, still no answer at quarterback

UND’s spring football season ended Saturday at the Alerus Center without an answer to the program’s biggest question. Who will start at quarterback in the fall when the Sioux begin their first season in the Big Sky Conference? However, there isn’t as much urgency to answering the question as there was last year. At the annual Green-White game, quarterbacks Joey Bradley — last year’s starter — and North Carolina transfer Braden Hanson both had their moments as the Green team took a 20-14 win over the White squad before nearly 2,000 fans.

UND FOOTBALL: Junior receiving duo lead deep receiving corps into Big Sky

UND junior wide receivers Greg Hardin and R.J. McGill had to speak with the media following Saturday’s Sioux football spring game at the Alerus Center. The pair got into a light-hearted argument over who got to speak first. The spat was evidence that the two are competitive at everything, a trait that even includes their production on the field. McGill had the upper hand in the spring game with six catches for 110 yards. Hardin almost accomplished the feat with four receptions for 99 yards and two touchdowns.

UND FOOTBALL: Offensive, defensive lines to be focus of coaches in Green-White spring game

Before today’s annual UND Green-White spring game, there will be a lot of beef on display outside the Alerus Center. The North Dakota Tailgate Sioux-Per Party will include plenty of beef — ribs and burgers — for fans to enjoy. Later, there will be enough beef on display inside the Alerus Center as the Sioux will play the Divide and Conquer spring game. The inside beef refers to the Sioux offensive and defensive lineman — two areas that will draw the watchful eye of UND coaches as the program conducts its last session of the spring season.

UND FOOTBALL: Former UND greats to serve as honorary coaches in Green-White spring game

One of UND’s all-time greats will return to serve as an honorary coach during the annual Green-White spring football game Saturday at the Alerus Center. Dave Osborn, a standout for the Sioux in the 1960s, and former UND standout defensive back Dan Martinsen will serve as honorary coaches for the game.

UND FOOTBALL: Redshirt freshman provides receiving corps with physicality

Three times during Saturday’s scrimmage at Memorial Stadium, UND’s Jameer Jackson caught a short pass and looked to gain extra yards. Jackson knew he wasn’t going to gain those yards with his speed. Jackson did gain extra yards by bowling over a handful of Sioux defenders — a trait that may get Jackson on the field in the fall when UND plays its first season in the Big Sky Conference. Since the beginning of UND’s Division I transition, the Sioux never have had a receiver more physically imposing than Jackson, a 6-foot-3, 233-pound redshirt freshman from Brooklyn Park, Minn.

CLIPBOARD: Fairweather leads UND at Creighton Golf Classic

UND freshman Amanda Fairweather shot an opening-round 84 on Monday to lead UND during the opening round of the Creighton Golf Classic. Fairweather, a native of Maple Valley, Wash., carded a 40 on the front nine, followed by a 44 to close out the round. She enters today’s action tied for 19th place. Fairweather and the Sioux are in 12th place in the team standings with a 359.

UND FOOTBALL: Defense still has upper hand at second spring scrimmage, offense making progress

A few plays into Saturday’s scrimmage, UND safety Erik Mersereau came up with an interception and sprinted approximately 30 yards before the whistle blew. Instead of stopping, he did a celebratory no-hands forward flip — an indication of his athleticism. But UND’s offense managed to flip the circumstances somewhat as the second scrimmage of the spring season progressed at Memorial Stadium. It wasn’t a great day by the offense, but there were signs of improvement. Still, UND’s defense remains the team’s strength as spring ball heads into its final week.

UND FOOTBALL: Looking for a big year from Shaugabay

Growing up in Warroad, Minn., Adam Shaugabay had to play hockey. “You have to play hockey,” Shaugabay said. “It’s in your blood up there. You’re so close to Canada and the (hockey) stick factory is there, too. As a little kid, you grew up watching the Warroad Warriors going to state and winning hockey championships with guys like T.J. Oshie. “But I played a lot of football, too.”

UND FOOTBALL: Defensive lineman Stanchik returns from broken leg in 2010

In UND’s 2010 homecoming game against Southern Utah, Sioux defensive lineman Seth Stanchik had a shot at taking down Thunderbirds’ quarterback Brad Sorenson. Stanchik fell to the Alerus Center turf. His season was over as he suffered a broken fibula and tibia. The severity of the injury also left UND wondering whether Stanchik’s career was over. But Stanchik is back and is in line to be a major contributor on the Sioux defensive line in the fall.

Many of the UND football team’s proven commodities took a back seat Saturday in the first live scrimmage of spring football. That gave Sioux coach Chris Mussman a chance to evaluate his depth. Expectedly, results were mixed.

A lack of depth at the receiver position was a problem last season. So far this spring, however, receiving depth appears to be better. A number of battles will take place today when UND holds its first spring scrimmage, scheduled for a 10:45 a.m. start at Memorial Stadium.
