Another nickname lawsuit goes to court 
Encouraged by its victory last month at the North Dakota Supreme Court, the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe goes into federal court this week to face the NCAA directly in the tribe’s effort to preserve use of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo at UND.

Fighting Sioux nickname hearing next week 
The North Dakota Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing at 3 p.m. March 15 to hear arguments in a case brought by Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, at the request of the State Board of Higher Education, seeking to have a nickname law adopted last spring declared unconstitutional.

Indian students applaud nickname retirement 
American Indian students at UND who have sued the university, the state and top state officials in federal court over the Fighting Sioux nickname have told the court they are encouraged by steps taken to retire the name, but those developments “in no way undermine (their) request for damages based on the defendants’ past conduct.”

In denying the request from the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe and others circulating petitions to force statewide votes on the issue, Grand Forks County District Judge Sonja Clapp said she will schedule another hearing in early January to determine whether the petitioners could move inside the arena for future events — including upcoming hockey series with Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Nickname petitioners plan legal action to access REA 
Ralph Engelstad Arena officials wouldn't let backers of petitions putting UND's Fighting Sioux nickname on the ballot be at the arena. The petitioners were directed to a "free speech" area near the book store. Arena officials have said they don't want "political activity" near the arena.
