The patron saint of Ireland will have a place of honor in Pat Sweeney’s household on March 17 — just as he does on the other 364 days of the year.
A painted picture of St. Patrick, for whom Sweeney, one of Grand Forks’ most well-known Irishmen was named, is on the wall of his home, next to his family coat of arms.
“That Saint Patrick, I’ve had that since I was a kid,” says Sweeney. Then he notes to a visitor that St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated as a religious holiday in Ireland. Not many people know that, Sweeney says, but he learned the little piece of Irish trivia when he was a child growing up in St. Paul.
Each year Pat O’Brien, a film actor and longtime grand marshal for the St. Patrick’s Day parade in St. Paul, would note that fact, Sweeney said.
