Part adventure, part business trip, part tradition. That’s what Black Friday in Grand Forks is about for six Winnipeg women and apparently many others who sacrifice sleep for bargains and the thrill of the hunt.
While the words “Black Friday” often conjure images of angry crowds fighting over discounted televisions, two Grand Forks shoppers show how Black Friday traditions can foster positive relationships with family and community members.
Whether it’s using smartphones to create shopping lists, browse store catalogs or search for deals, the high-tech mobile devices can enhance the shopping experience and reduce the stress associated with it.
When Aimee Brittain's team hits the stores in a commando-like fashion on Thanksgiving night in search of Black Friday deals, they'll stand out from the crowd in their matching "very bright blue" shirts. They'll scatter when they hit the store, and the shirts will help them see each other quickly.
Despite an outcry from some employees, both stores and shoppers seemed to like it. Some people went shopping with a full belly, going straight from the dinner table to the stores. Others slept off their big meal and went to the mall before daybreak on Black Friday.
Black Friday, the annual day-after-Thanksgiving sale for many retailers, is starting even earlier this year in Grand Forks and around the nation. But the earlier hours aren’t being cheered by everyone.
Initial reports show a record number of shoppers hit the mall or bought gifts online during the holiday weekend. Thanksgiving weekend is a make-or-break time for many retailers. For the past six years, Black Friday has been the biggest sales day of the year.
