DNR fry marking study a high-tech venture
Fisheries crews for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources again this spring marked walleye fry with oxytetracycline, or OTC, as part of an eight-year study launched in 2008 to determine the optimum number of fry that should be restocked in lakes where eggs are removed for stocking purpose.

WEEKLY DNR ENFORCEMENT REPORT: Fishing opener, Wolf depredation, Sandhill crane survey
Natural Resources Pilot John Heineman (Bemidji) flew the sandhill crane survey with the helicopter in northwest Minnesota. This is the first year DNR Wildlife has flown this survey. We have been finding some of their nests with one to two eggs and have seen a couple of young cranes.

The sandhill crane survey, which covers an area from Crookston north through Thief River Falls to the Canadian border, will count both nesting pairs and nonbreeding cranes in the Minnesota hunting zone to better monitor breeding populations.

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department paid $484,822 in taxes last year to counties in which it owns or leases land. Game and Fish manages more than 200,000 acres in 50 counties, and the in-lieu-of-tax payments are the same as property taxes paid by private landowners.

CO Ben Huener (Roseau) reports a calf depredation was investigated near Lancaster that turned out to be caused by coyotes. Several arson fires were investigated and sturgeon anglers were checked on the Rainy River.
