RALPH KINGSBURY: West where it’s at
The state tax department has released the total 2008 and fourth quarter 2008 reports on taxable sales and purchases. Both for the state as a whole and for most of its towns, we continue to see a level of economic activity that no one really imagined.

Lesson learned: Deregulation went too far.
Whenever I am around other people, I’m asked what I think is going to happen to our economy, both in the short term and in the long run. The question comes not only from people who have been laid off or have seen declines in their income, but also from those who probably are doing better this year than last.

This is no Depression
Region’s comparative strength holds up.
But we need to remember certain things about this situation. During the Great Depression, the best unemployment rate the country saw was about 14.5 percent. The worst was more than 33 percent. Unemployment never improved beyond that until 1939, when we began building military equipment for Britain.
Today, our national unemployment rate is about 8.5 percent, and in North Dakota, it is about 3.5 percent.
