DOUG LEIER: Once rare, eagles now are common sight
Bald eagles have recovered from endangered status to the point where sightings are common in much of North Dakota, and therefore the novelty of such sightings has diminished somewhat.

DOUG LEIER: 'Feasting' on the new fishing proclamation
At 40, I don’t necessarily consider myself old, but I do know I’m old enough to remember the drought of the late 1980s and early 1990s when Devils Lake was hardly visible from Minnewaukan, and one day I walked across the parched bottom of Hobart Lake in Barnes County.

DOUG LEIER: ‘Hunting’ without a license
Bird watching is alternative to huntingI’ve had the opportunity to hunt many different places and species across North Dakota, much of it a result of having lived in more than 10 different ZIP codes across the state.

DOUG LEIER: Outdoors enthusiasts fund many conservation programs
This year marks 75 years since President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act, the first of several landmark pieces of federal legislation that provide funds for wildlife and fisheries management as well as fishing, hunting, shooting and boating recreational and educational programs.

NORTH DAKOTA OUTDOORS: Mild winter does wonders for wildlife
Winter officially began in December, and except for a few days of normal cold, it didn’t even feel like winter through January.

DOUG LEIER: Fewer deer may be misleading
Animals may be more spread out in areaAs a biologist, I deal with aspects of fish and wildlife behavior on a routine basis. Hardly a week goes by that I don’t get at least one phone call or email from someone who witnessed an odd, strange or erratic animal behavior, or saw something in an unusual location. After almost two decades in the field, I have learned to “never say never.” Even if I get a call on a pink flamingo in a stormwater retention pond, my initial response would be “could be, you just never know.”

NORTH DAKOTA OUTDOORS: Gaining perspective in an ‘outdoors classroom’
Over the holidays I bumped into an old high school friend, and true to form for a couple of guys who love the outdoors and also have young families, we began sharing stories.

DOUG LEIER: Hunters, anglers reflect in offseason
While many hunters and anglers associate spring and summer with fishing season and fall with hunting season, truth be told, fishing in North Dakota is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days each year.

DOUG LEIER: 2012 looking good for hunting, fishing
As I mentioned in my column last week, many of us can’t wait to put up a new calendar and hope for improvements in the year to come.

NORTH DAKOTA OUTDOORS: Speaking for northern pike offers another fishing optiion
The State Game and Fish Department has worked methodically to design a season that is practical, provides opportunities in most areas of the state and still protects the resource.

NORTH DAKOTA OUTDOORS: Wet cycle means more fish habitiat
When it comes to fish movement, the North Dakota Game and Fish Department would prefer the natural expansion and not illegal introductions from random anglers acting as a sort of arm-chair fisheries biologists.

DOUG LEIER: There’s always a column in spring fishing, deer season, pheasant outlook

NORTH DAKOTA OUTDOORS: There’s lots to do with PLOTS
Over the past two decades, the North Dakota Game and Fish Department has emphasized wildlife habitat enhancement and hunting access on private land through its Private Land Initiative.

NORTH DAKOTA OUTDOORS: Game wardens play an important role
Over the course of a career, a game warden interacts with thousands of hunters, anglers, trappers and other outdoor participants. Most of these interactions are positive experiences with the warden verifying that people have the proper licenses and equipment, and haven’t taken more game or fish than the law allows.

DOUG LEIER: FAQs from the North Dakota Game and Fish Department
Questions tend to flow with the seasons, and while hunting is starting to gain ground, fishing continues to lead my list of phone, email and random inquiries. Here’s a sample of some the North Dakota Game and Fish Department typically receives, with answers from the Game and Fish website, www.gf.nd.gov.
