Lighter winds and cooler temperatures delivered encouragement today as firefighters continued efforts to contain a blaze that was in a "pause mode" — days after it moved at breakneck speeds, swallowing roughly 160 square miles of forest along the Minnesota-Canada border.
A rapidly expanding wildfire in Minnesota's north woods spread a plume of smoke across the Upper Midwest, with haze smudging the sky as far away as Chicago and Milwaukee, where the Brewers closed their stadium roof before a night game.
Firefighters have been able to contain about 10 percent of the blaze that has scorched about 6,200 acres, or roughly 10 square miles in Colorado. It was the first time officials reported being able to hold any part of the 20-mile-long fire perimeter.

The Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Department issued a burning ban Sunday afternoon for the entire county, effective until further notice. The warmer-than-normal spring, with average or below precipitation has combined with breezy conditions to make the pre-green-up period after snow-melt rife with fire possibilities.
Winnipeg police officers have been instructed to hand out a minimum of one traffic ticket per shift, something critics are questioning at a time when there is escalating gang violence. CTV News has learned an internal memo was sent out to officers strongly encouraging them to hand out more traffic tickets.
