N.D. PSC will seek $3.9 million to reclaim coal mines in western part of state 
The mines south of Columbus in Burke County and north of Beulah in Mercer County went out of business decades ago, before state and federal laws required them to be reclaimed for farming and ranching use. Under the Burke County project, new vegetation would be planted on about 350 acres of mined land and about 1.3 miles of "high walls," created when the mine's open pits were dug, would be leveled.

Taconite mining plants on Minnesota's Iron Range operated at close to capacity in 2011 
Minnesota's taconite mining operations ran at or close to capacity in 2011. The Mesabi Daily News reports that the Iron Range produced an estimated 38.9 million tons of iron pellets last year. That's 3.8 million tons more than in 2010, and much better than the 17.1 million in the downturn year of 2009.

Tax break for Minnesota's taconite plants slashed 
The Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board voted Thursday to chop a taconite production tax reimbursement nearly in half. The five plants will get nearly $5 million instead of nearly $10 million they expected this year. The money saved will go instead to public works projects on the Iron Range.
