By Diann Bratlie , June 01, 2012
Minnesota anti-union fighter honored as fallen deputy
The name of a Minneapolis executive who was killed in a 1934 scuffle with union workers has been etched on a law enforcement officers' memorial in Washington, D.C. — a decision that doesn't sit well with some labor historians.

Frank Hurt, BCTGM Union president, column: Lockout ruins communities, smothers dream
This union goes into every set of negotiations looking for a fair and equitable settlement. The BCTGM concludes nearly 99 percent of our negotiations without a work stoppage, one of the best records in the labor movement.

Al Rebsch, Grand Forks, letter: ‘Labor dispute’ a misnomer in Crystal case
It is management that locked out the union workers when, by overwhelming majorities, those workers twice refused to submit to the demands.
So, shouldn’t the paper properly describe this situation as a management dispute?
By Al Rebsch , April 29, 2012
Jerry Hoiseth, Crookston, column: Crystal workers, not growers, took biggest hit
Add it all up, and you’ll get the dollar amount lost by a single worker. Then multiply that by the number of year-round employees.
Now, that’s a large sum of money, people. And it’s money that could have and should have gone into local workers’ pockets rather than replacement workers’ bank accounts.
By Jerry Hoiseth , April 22, 2012
Scott Ripplinger, Manvel, N.D., letter: Growers’ losses add up to tens of millions
This translates to a cost so far for the lockout at $133 million with a 22 ton yield on 440,000 acres.
The growers need to determine if this really is in their and the company’s best interests.
By Scott Ripplinger , April 15, 2012
LoriJayne M. Grahn, Pelican Rapids, Minn., letter: Who’ll be the next to be locked out?
If American Crystal Sugar Co. gets away with locking out good and hard-working people just because of disagreements on a new contract, then who among any of us good and hard-working people will be next to be locked out from our jobs?
By LoriJayne M. Grahn , April 14, 2012
Nathan Rham, Hillsboro, N.D., letter: S.S. Crystal Sugar lookouts call out, ‘Iceberg ahead’
The numbers don’t lie. This lockout is costing the growers more than American Crystal's CEO is letting on.
By Nathan Rham , April 12, 2012
Rick Krull, Moorhead, letter: Lockout’s effects show up in beet prices
Shareholders and growers, don’t you think it’s time to call your board of directors and tell them to end this lockout, and get the workers who have made your company profitable for many years back to work?
By Rick Krull , April 08, 2012
Kevin Solum, Barnesville, Minn., letter: Growers should reassert control over Crystal
It is time for all growers to re-establish control of THEIR company, restore American Crystal Sugar’s reputation and regain its profitability.
By Kevin Solum , March 31, 2012
Debra Kostrzewski, Argyle, Minn., letter: Do growers want another 2011-2012?
Co-op members, do you really want to go through another year like this one? Or would you prefer to have skilled, experienced and hard-working people back on the jobs they loved and respected and gave their all for?

By Canadian Press , March 19, 2012
Richard Larson, Grand Forks, letter: Growers should grill Crystal management
American Crystal should end this lockout before it’s too late. The company is giving good jobs to people who aren’t from around here. Meanwhile, we in the region have had stakes in these communities all our lives.
By Richard Larson , March 19, 2012
