SUV-semitrailer collision kills Minnesota, Iowa drivers 
The collision between a sport utility vehicle and a semitrailer has killed both drivers in western Iowa. The Iowa State Patrol says the accident occurred around 4:35 p.m. Sunday on Iowa Highway 44, about two miles east of Portsmouth.

Minnesota man get suspended sentence in hog heist 
A Minnesota man has been given a suspended 10-year prison sentence for stealing hundreds of hogs in Iowa and Minnesota. The Globe Gazette in Mason City says 44-year-old John Arndt, of Hayfield, Minn., was sentenced on a theft charge earlier this month in Mitchell County.

Authorities say 57-year-old Alan Oberloh, of Worthington, Minn., hit two cows early Monday on Iowa Highway 60. He wasn't hurt, but both cows died. His truck had $10,000 in damage.

Iowan killed in snowmobile accident near Orr, Minn. 
Timothy James Schultz, 45, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died as a result of head trauma after a snowmobile accident Saturday near Orr. The accident occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m. on the Bill Morgan Trail between the Arrowhead and Ash River trails, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department. Schultz struck a tree.

Small town in Iowa lures business from neighbor Iowa City with incentives 
When the leaders of this small Iowa city became desperate to land a new department store, they didn’t have to look far: They lured one from the city next door, along with up to 100 jobs. The store called Von Maur agreed to leave Iowa City for a platter of incentives offered by Coralville, which promised to put up a bigger, $9.5 million building, to provide a $1.5 million parcel of land and to discount the store’s property tax bill. It even offered $650,000 to cover any penalties related to the store’s departure.

Officials warn Midwest farmers to purchase crop insurance 
A relatively snow-free winter in the Upper Midwest has some officials worried about damage to agriculture if the dry weather persists into spring planting. Minnesota's agriculture and commerce commissioners, Dave Frederickson and Mike Rothman, signaled their concern when they advised farmers Thursday to buy crop insurance before next month's deadline. Most of Minnesota is in the earliest stage of drought, and parts of Iowa and the Dakotas also are abnormally dry or worse.
