The first day of the 41st annual UND Writers Conference began with a question that has more and more gravitas in the age of digital media, the so-called new media that lives online, can be interactive and sometimes links one story to another:
Are books obsolete? Does new media replace books, or is new media more an alternative to words on paper?
The venerable and frequently irreverent UND Writers Conference will begin today, its 41st annual year, headlined by an author who’s been described as both a genius and a tortured artist, and who has won a Pulitzer Prize with a comic book depiction of the Holocaust.
The 40th annual UND Writers Conference begins today in Grand Forks. Admission is free, and it’s open to the public. Here’s a schedule. All events will be held at the UND Memorial Union Ballroom unless otherwise noted

The conference will feature author readings, panel discussions, a president’s lecture, workshops, even a film festival. As always, admission to the events at UND Memorial Union will be free.
Writers Conference celebrates 40th year; everything is free and open to the public. The UND Writers Conference is celebrating its 40th year of bringing top-notch writing talent to Grand Forks. This year’s theme is “Wit,” which conference director Heidi Czerwiec said was a good choice coming after last year’s serious theme of “Revolutions.”
The North Dakota Playwrights Co-op had a productive year in 2008, both as writers and as a producing agency for new work, its leads said, and now they’re getting started a series of workshop meetings for those interested in writing plays and scripts.
