John Anderson, Washington, column: Wind energy poses little threat to wildlife
No development activity is 100 percent safe for wildlife, but the wind energy industry’s impacts are minor. And our industry does more to study, avoid and mitigate for our impacts than does any other industry in the country.

Alternative energy: North Dakota's prairie winds waning
The Coteau des Prairie hills that form a hummocky spine through McIntosh County provide a perfect platform for wind turbines. They’ve been chosen as the site for a sprawling 200-megawatt wind farm six miles north of here — one of 20 wind projects that have been permitted or are in the regulatory pipeline in North Dakota.

UPDATE: Birds focus of newly unveiled wind power guidelines
A bird advocacy group that lobbied for mandatory standards said the new, voluntary guidelines will do little to protect hundreds of thousands of birds killed each year by wind turbines. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said the guidelines, which take effect immediately, provide a scientific basis for developers and government regulators to identify sites with low risk to wildlife while allowing for more wind energy projects on private and public lands.

South Dakota wind projects can’t keep pace with North Dakota
North Dakota is expected to add hundreds of megawatts of wind energy this year, while development has slowed to a near stop in South Dakota. The difference seems to be the availability of high-voltage power lines to ship the power to cities that need it.

John Anderson, Washington, column: Keep windmills’ impacts in perspective
Studies comparing the impacts of different energy sources consistently find wind power’s impact among the lowest — not surprising, given that wind power requires no mining or drilling for fuel, uses virtually no water and creates no air pollution, water pollution or greenhouse gases.
