Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officials are considering holding firearms safety training in state parks. It's to accommodate a growing demand for classes. In the three years the course has been offered online, enrollment has grown from 2,000 to a predicted 6,000 to 8,000 this year.

Judge sentences ND man on illegal weapons charges 
A federal judge says a North Dakota man must serve more than eight years in prison on illegal weapons charges. Pertoskie Williams, of Maddock, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a stolen firearm. He pleaded guilty in September 2011.

Mandan man arrested for loaded gun at Bismarck airport 
Police Sgt. Mark Buschena tells the Bismarck Tribune that airport security officers saw the outline of a handgun in the man's carry-on bag with X-ray. Police say the man had two magazines with him and both were loaded. One of the magazines was in the .45-caliber pistol.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says his office has been getting up to 300 applications daily from people wanting a permit to carry a concealed weapon. He says most are coming from counties within the oil patch and many of the inquiries are from women.

Minnesota lawmakers get Dayton bill to arm prosecutors 
The state Senate voted 53-10 on Thursday for the measure, which previously passed the House with little dissent. It now goes to Gov. Mark Dayton. The bill gained steam after Cook County Attorney Tim Scannell was shot and wounded in December last year by a man he had successfully prosecuted.

Minn. police, attorneys oppose deadly force bill 
Key police chiefs and county prosecutors joined together on Thursday to urge Minnesota lawmakers to not pass legislation that would give people more freedom to use deadly force when protecting themselves. The legislation creates the presumption that a person in their home or other dwelling who uses deadly force does so believing they are in danger of harm or death. The bill also removes the obligation for that person to retreat from such a situation. It's headed for a full Senate vote soon.
