A former employee of the Turtle Mountain Housing Authority pleaded guilty Monday in Bismarck’s federal court to a charge of stealing from a tribal organization, the U.S. attorney’s office said in a news release.
Loren Hofer was once offered 35 cents for the copper spear point he found walking home from school years ago near Verdon, S.D. “I’m glad I didn’t sell it,” said Hofer, now of Mora, Minn. He now believes that spear point is thousands of years old — and likely worth more than a dime and a quarter.

The top federal Indian gaming regulator is lecturing at UND this week, and he said some things Tuesday that shed light on the somewhat-dormant effort by the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa to build a new off-reservation casino in Grand Forks.
This weekend’s celebration of the Metis heritage is getting under way at the International Peace Garden. The Metis people were of Cree and French lineage. Descendants can be found in Minnesota, Manitoba and North Dakota, including members of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa.The tribe is organizing the first International MetisFest at the Peace Garden, a park that straddles the U.S.-Canada border north of Dunseith and signifies the peace between the two nations.
Minot’s airport director said the city is losing one of its four commercial flights in September, but it could return later. The Delta flight had been arriving just before 1 p.m. and left for Minneapolis at 1:15 p.m. Airport Director Andy Solsvig said the number of passengers has not been high enough to keep the flight. But he expects the airline will add capacity as demand increases.
