Barred from using lead in children’s jewelry because of its toxicity, some Chinese manufacturers have been substituting the more dangerous heavy metal cadmium in sparkling charm bracelets and shiny pendants being sold throughout the United States, an Associated Press investigation shows.
Daisy had swallowed some of her boys’ Magnetix, a magnetic construction toy that consist of a combination of plastic building pieces and steel balls that can be connected to form various shapes and structures. Her boys had received them for Christmas.
The local Toys for Tots campaign served a record number of families and children this holiday season, the coordinator said Saturday.
“We had practically double the number of families and double the number of children signed up for the program,” Pat Berger said.
The nation's retailers expanded their hours and offered deep discounts on everything from toys to TVs in hopes of getting consumers, many of whom are worried about high unemployment and tight credit, to open their wallets.
Toy makers and retailers alike are trying to avoid last year's dismal season, when retailers were forced to slash prices to move expensive toys amid the consumer spending downturn. Overall toy sales fell 5 percent during the holiday quarter, according to market research firm NPD Group Inc.
