The EF-1 tornado lasted from about 4:35 to 4:45 p.m. and the path width was 100 to 150 yards. Peak winds in the storm reached around 100 mph.

National Weather Service issued tornado warning in Grand Forks, Polk counties

Parts of Grand Forks and Polk counties were under a tornado warning Thursday afternoon after a funnel cloud was spotted west of Minto at 3:45 p.m. No tornadoes were reported, either before or after the warning was issued at 4:15 p.m., according to Jeff Makowski, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’ Grand Forks office.

Twisters land near Northwood

Two tornadoes touched down near Northwood, N.D., during a storm that moved through Grand Forks County Wednesday night. One of the twisters caused small-limb damage to shelter belts 6 miles northeast of Northwood while the other broke tree trunks in half and uprooted one tree 7 miles northeast of the town, according to Greg Gust, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks.

Thunderstorm watch for eastern North Dakota until 10 p.m.

UPDATED at 8:15 p.m.: A tornado warning in effect for a big swath of northwest Minnesota until 8 p.m. today, expired with no reports of actual tornadoes. The warning included west-central Beltrami County, northwest Clearwater County, southeastern Marshall County, eastern Pennington County and east-central Polk county. Meanwhile, a severe thunderstorm watch for most of eastern North Dakota, from Grand Forks to Fargo, Harvey and Lisbon, continues until 10 p.m. The National Weather Service says radar showed at 7:04 p.m. a severe thunderstorm, capable of producing a tornado, six miles west of Espelie, Minn., or 19 miles northeast of Thief River Falls, moving southeast at 30 mph. People in the general path of this storm should seek cover, abandon cars or trailer homes and seek sturdier shelters, according to the weather service. Hail up to 1.75 inch in diameter fell near Larimore, N.D., late this afternoon as a thunderstorm moved from west to east through the area. A severe thunderstorm watch for southern Grand Forks County remains in effect until 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks.
