Judge tosses Spirit Lake lawsuit against NCAA
U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson has granted the NCAA’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought by the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe, a major setback to American Indians trying to preserve UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname. Erickson filed his order late Tuesday in Fargo, where lawyers for the two sides had presented oral arguments on April 19.

Patricia Robertson, 53, will spend six months of her time on home confinement. U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says the woman who also is known as Patricia Cavanaugh was ordered to pay back the tribe nearly $5,500.

Rulings could bring crackdown on Indian reservation domestic violence
Despite a well-known epidemic of domestic violence on American Indian reservations, federal authorities have long been stymied in their pursuit of abusive parents and spouses. That may change if recent rulings in the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation case of Roman Cavanaugh case and a similar matter are upheld, allowing U.S attorneys to act instead of watching abuse convictions pile up at the tribal level.

Spirit Lake group plans North Dakota initiative ballot effort to keep Fighting Sioux nickname
Minot attorney Reed Soderstrom says the group will offer a North Dakota constitutional amendment that will say UND teams must be known as the Fighting Sioux. Initiative supporters need about 27,000 petition signatures to put the issue on the ballot in November 2012.
