Dwight Messner, Grand Forks, letter: No escaping ownership of U.S. national debt
As Americans, we have to tell our elected representatives that we will pay our fair share of taxes, but Congress must stop borrowing us into “prosperity.” Only the merchants of greed are being enriched.

Dustin Gawrylow, Bismarck, letter: The simple but sour debt-ceiling solution
While politicians in Washington argue over which bandage to put over the wound, it really is just an issue of dollars and sense.

By Martin Crutsinger , March 28, 2011
UPDATE: Gas prices drive consumer spending increase in February
UPDATED 10:23 A.M.The Commerce Department said today that consumer spending jumped 0.7 percent in February. Personal incomes rose 0.3 percent. That was after a 1.2 percent January income increase — the biggest in nearly two years. Both gains reflected a Social Security tax cut, which boosted take-home pay. Terry Guttormson, Hendrum, Minn., letter: Spending must fall — and taxes must rise
While I hate taxes as much as the next guy, I think most reasonable people can understand that it will take additional revenue — along with some painful cuts — to rid our state of the $6 billion deficit built by former Govs. Tim Pawlenty and Jesse Ventura.

EARMARKS FACT CHECK: Ban on pet projects mostly symbolic
Despite their claims, the Republicans’ ban on earmarks won’t stop lawmakers from steering taxpayers’ dollars to pet projects. And it will have little if any effect on Washington’s far graver problem — the gigantic budget deficit.

Jerry Nagel, Lake Park, Minn., letter: ‘The N.D. Way’ depends an awful lot on fed
The most recent data on federal taxes paid out and federal funds taken in is illuminating. The data show that North Dakota paid in $3.8 billion in federal taxes and received $6.6 billion of federal funds. By contrast, Minnesota paid in $40.5 billion and received $31 billion, and California paid in $289.6 billion and received $242 billion.

COLUMNIST DAVID BROOKS: Running up deficits may hurt, not help
These Demand Siders have very high IQs, but they seem to be strangers to doubt and modesty. They have total faith in their models. But all schools of economic thought have taken their lumps over the past few years. Are you really willing to risk national insolvency on the basis of a model?
