Wages and benefits paid to U.S. workers posted a modest gain in the fourth quarter, ending a year in which recession-battered workers saw their compensation rise by the smallest amount on records going back more than a quarter-century.
With university presidents now among the best-paid state employees in North Dakota, the State Board of Higher Education is trying to figure out a way to offer additional incentives for superior performance in a way the public and lawmakers can accept.
They have friends around the country who have lost their jobs or had to take a cut in pay. That’s why Gene Taylor, Lynn Dorn and Brian Faison are thankful they are able offer raises to their coaches at North Dakota State and UND.

Senators and Gov. John Hoeven say House Republicans’ plan to force state agencies to wait for lawmakers’ approval before using excess salary dollars or filling vacant employee positions is unworkable. When both sides refused to budge in talks Thursday morning, the Senate negotiators agreed to the House plan temporarily only so they can take the bill to the full Senate for a vote, where it will be rejected one way or another.
