North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven today asked President Barack Obama to declare an emergency for the $33 million in damages the April 1-3 snow storm did across south-central and southwest parts of the state.
It’s clear from the length of this deliberative process and from the flood of leaks that have emerged from Kabul and Washington that the perfect course of action does not exist. Given that reality, the urgent necessity is to make a decision — whether or not it is right.
Complex campaign may never have a defined ending
Defense Secretary Robert Gates and other top Pentagon officials have said they need to show clear progress against the insurgents within 12 to 18 months to firm up public confidence in the war effort. But they are not venturing firm estimates of how long it will take to achieve their central goal of defeating al-Qaida and the Taliban in both Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan.
President Barack Obama said a government-run health insurance option is needed “to discipline insurance companies,” part of his rallying cry for comprehensive health care overhaul. If they can’t compete, it’s probably their fault. Many private insurers, he said, spend too much time thinking about profits instead of helping people.
