BOYS HOCKEY: Riders open East Region tourney with 6-0 win over Devils Lake
For the first time, the region tournament opened with the highest seeds hosting the quarterfinals early in the week. Also, the Roughriders’ first-round opponent, Devils Lake, employed a rare strategy in hopes of turning around the Firebirds’ regular-season fortunes against Red River — both 8-1 defeats. It wasn’t a thing of beauty, but the No. 1, unbeaten Roughriders still knocked off No. 8 Devils Lake 6-0 at Purpur Arena to advance to Friday’s semifinals.

BOYS HOCKEY: Bruins blank Knights
The East Region boys hockey tournament begins Tuesday.
“Every team now has a clean slate,” Grand Forks Central coach Tony Bina says.
That’s wonderful news for the Knights, who ended the regular season getting outscored 13-0 in their last two games. The latest blowout loss was a 6-0 decision against Fargo South-Shanley on Thursday in Purpur Arena.
Josh Loken scored three goals, Jarrett Olson-Etches added a goal and two assists as the Bruins — a team Central beat early in the season — put the game on running time for the entire third period.

On his CaringBridge website, Jack Jablonski's family says he is entering the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Jablonski, 16, had been hospitalized since his injury in a Dec. 30 hockey game.
