Twisters land near Northwood 
Two tornadoes touched down near Northwood, N.D., during a storm that moved through Grand Forks County Wednesday night. One of the twisters caused small-limb damage to shelter belts 6 miles northeast of Northwood while the other broke tree trunks in half and uprooted one tree 7 miles northeast of the town, according to Greg Gust, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks.

A woman was hospitalized after a fire started in the bathroom of her house in rural Northwood, N.D., early Friday morning, according to the Grand Forks Sheriff’s Department.

‘Pratincolous’ trips up N.D. spelling champ
The North Dakota farm boy was tripped up by a word referring to living in a meadow. Ty Korsmo, the 12-year-old from Northwood, N.D., representing the state in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., missed spelling “pratincolous” when his turn came in Thursday’s semifinal round.

Businessman, radio personality Howard Webb leaves legacy of active retirement
Howard Webb, a longtime Grand Forks dairy company salesman who in retirement became a public figure of sorts for his work on radio covering local government, died Sunday, April 8, in the Northwood (N.D.) Deaconess Health Center. He was 96.

N.D. deputy who died on the job given award
The Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday posthumously awarded the Sheriff’s Cross Award to Bryan Sleeper. The 39-year-old deputy died of an apparent heart attack last September during an arrest.

A Northwood, N.D., woman was sentenced Thursday for defrauding Grand Forks County Social Services of nearly $39,000.
Sarah Beth Nordling, 32, will not do jail time, but must pay $32,601.88 in restitution.
