After gearing up for the space agency’s much-hyped mission to hurl two spacecraft into the moon, the public turned away from the sky Friday anything but dazzled.
NASA bulldozed two spacecraft into the lunar south pole this morning in a search for hidden ice. Instruments confirm that a large empty rocket hull barreled into the moon at 7:31 a.m., followed four minutes later by a probe with cameras taking pictures of the first crash.
The satellite swung by the moon Tuesday and took pictures for an hour, passing within 2,000 miles. Now, it’s well past the moon in an elongated orbit around Earth. In October, it will slam into a crater at the moon’s south pole.
