by most accounts, it has been a confusing and murky time in the nation’s largest Lutheran denomination since the ELCA’s decision last August to allow pastors in committed same-sex relationships to serve openly.
Leaders of a group within the nation’s largest Lutheran church who object to the new rule allowing pastors to live in gay and lesbian relationships announced Thursday they would form a new denomination.
The congregation of the First Lutheran Church of Harvey has cast the first of two votes to split from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Two-thirds of the congregation voted in favor of the split last month. The congregation must wait 90 days before the second and final vote.
Charges have been filed against a man suspected in two attacks on St. Paul senior citizens. Police on Friday were still looking for Michael L. Pye, 53. Nationwide warrants have been issued for his arrest.
