Dwight Messner, Grand Forks, letter: ‘Arrive a guest. Leave a Legend’
With unveiling of the North Dakota Tourism’s new marketing campaign slogan for 2012: “Arrive a guest. Leave a Legend.” I have to say, I think it must have been written only after the recent incident where a homeless man from Aspen, Colo., came to North Dakota to work in the Oil Patch and ended up in the Williams County jail after he arrived.

Cadence Youngberg and Judy Jahnke, Grand Forks, letter: Thanks for helping at Christmas Eve Dinner
The 39th annual Community Christmas Eve Dinner at St. Michael’s was a huge success. Thank you to the many volunteers who donated time, talents, desserts and money.

Cory Christofferson, Hamar, N.D., letter: Dalrymple benefits from ag, oil booms
I would like to respond to Jerry Youngberg’s letter touting the great leadership of North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple. He cites our state’s economic growth as proof of his amazing leadership abilities.

Bev Benda, Grand Forks, letter: 'Walkability' is the sign of a healthy city
Like Ed Weber, I am also appalled at the city’s decision to ban walkers from the Alerus Center.
As a health professional who strives to assist people in their wellness programs, I see this as a barrier to success. “Go somewhere else” is government at its worst and unsupportive of our citizens’ desire for fitness.

IN THE MAIL: Dorgan, focus on nation, not state ... N.D. must expand CHIP eligibility
With all due respect, Sen. Dorgan, we have North Dakota covered. Now we need you and your colleagues to do your job in Washington and make the tough decisions that are best for North Dakota and our nation so we can get our country back on track.

IN THE MAIL: Justice demands driiver face tougher charges ... first-class health care right here at home
y sincere sympathy goes to the Grand Forks families who lost their children in the tragic accident over the weekend. I also hope that the individual hospitalized recovers fully.

OUR OPINION: On letters, nickname and otherwise
At the Herald, we’re guessing we’ve received 50 to 100 pieces of mail, enough so that we’ve devoted several editorial pages to the topic of UND's Fighting Sioux nickname and even used Page A5 for extra letters one day last week.
And here’s another guess: The letters are running about 6-to-1 or 7-to-1 against the board’s actions and in support of the nickname.

C.T. Marhula, Grand Forks, letter: Letters should include writers’ affiliations
The Herald certainly provides readers with a geographic diversity of views. It should consider adding value by providing some background information on its letter writers.

Margaret Bitz, Fargo, letter: Why not incent people to buy insurance?
The Senate Finance Committee health care reform bill requires everyone to get health insurance and penalizes people who don’t get it.
By Margaret Bitz , October 11, 2009
Joshua Ruschhaupt, Fargo, letter: Air Force base should become 1Sky ally
Whereas, retired Vice Adm. Dennis McGinn recently spoke in Grand Forks on the importance of taking action now to lessen the increasing “threat multipliers” of global warming pollution, a position that the retired flag officers of the CNA Military Advisory Board strongly support;

Pat Schulz, Bismarck, letter: Give Conrad credit for abortion vote
Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., deserves our praise for his thoughtful and brave votes recently prohibiting federal funding from being used for elective abortion as the Senate Finance Committee considers its health reform bill.

Robert Dusso, Grand Forks, letter: Thanks for making scouting event a success
The first “Family Campout for New Cub Scouts” was a success.
I’d like to thank everyone involved.

Joshua Boschee, Fargo, letter: Coming Out Day means no more apologies
I was visiting with a friend the other day about the upcoming community events in honor of National Coming Out Day, which is today. He asked me why I felt the need to celebrate a day to “flaunt” who I was in public and “force” people to come out

Joe LaPorte, Grand Forks, letter: New Smiley still needs a hat and a bow tie
Now that the old Smiley water tower has been torn down, a new Smiley water tower has been born.
By Joe LaPorte , October 11, 2009
Rozean Osmundson, Myrtle Beach, letter: Yes, future generations can enjoy Smiley
I grew very sad as I learned and watched (over the Internet) the removal of Smiley, the water tower.
