Most reports for walleyes and saugers indicate a good bite closer to shore during the morning hours on Lake of the Woods. Many of the access roads have been closed, and anglers should check with area resorts or bait shops because conditions can change daily this time of year.

OUTDOORS REPORT: Fishing, skiing, snowmobiling condittions
Lake of the Woods anglers are finding walleyes, perch and saugers about five miles north of Pine Island over 32 feet of water, and some resorts have started venturing even farther north in recent days. The midday bite has been most productive, with gold or red-glow jigging spoons and minnow heads.

Lake of the woods The mud flats north of Pine Island are kicking out walleyes and saugers in 30 to 34 feet. The afternoon hours have been best with shiner minnows and any jig that glows. Look in the 20-foot range during the early morning and evening hours. At the Northwest Angle, walleyes, saugers and some jumbo perch are being found around the islands in 20 to 30 feet of water throughout the day.

AREA FISHING REPORT: The latest from area lakes, rivers
Ice conditions are great on Lake of the Woods, with 12 inches reported near Morris Point, 8 inches in Four-Mile Bay and 6 inches on the Rainy River near Clementson, Minn. Walleyes are hitting shiner minnows in 15 to 24 feet of water with good numbers of 15- to 18-inch fish reported. Several big northern pike also have been taken. Near Pine Island, consistent catches of walleyes as long as 18 inches have been caught in 16 to 22 feet of water.

Fishing report
Lake of the Woods: Rainy River remains slow for this time of year, and most of the walleyes continue to stage in the lake outside Lighthouse Gap in about 30 feet of water. Good reports also are coming from Zippel Bay in 18 feet of water, the Twin Islands off Long Point in 26 feet of water and, farther north, Knight Island in 23 feet of water.

b>Lake of the WoodsIncredible walleye numbers are being pulled from just outside Lighthouse Gap north to Little Oak Island in the Northwest Angle. West of Garden Island, downrigging has produced walleyes in 25 to 30 feet of water. Hammered gold spinner rigs continue to work well, and anglers also are catching fish anchored and jigging with frozen shiners in 28 to 32 feet of water.

b>Lake of the WoodsTrolling spinner rigs and nightcrawlers has produced good walleye and sauger catches in 25 to 30 feet of water on the southeast side of Garden Island and the northeast side of Little Oak Island. Along the south shore, Zippel Bay and Morris Point are safe bets for walleyes in 30 to 32 feet of water, with jigs and minnows seeming to work best.
