NCAA holds ground on nickname agreement
Citing concerns expressed last week by leaders of the Big Sky Conference, which UND hopes to enter next year, the NCAA statement notes that the conference presidents’ position “is consistent with the spirit and intent of the settlement agreement the NCAA reached with the university to retire the nickname and logo.”

Rich Becker, Grand Forks, column: NCAA should respect will of N.D., Spirit Lake
It is past time for the NCAA to reflect on the message that Spirit Lake has been trying to communicate to them as to the tribe’s reasons for supporting and partnering with UND.

Patricia Bohnet, Grand Forks, letter: Put student athletes first in logo debate
Today, as we struggle to come to grips with a state law mandating that UND keep the Sioux nickname and with the NCAA threatening sanctions if we do, I wonder where Dad would have weighed in on this debate.
But I’m quite sure I know.

OUR OPINION: Getting to ‘yes’ with the NCAA
What’s the best way to boost the odds that the NCAA will accept the state’s case? Clearly, the best way is the way the State Board of Higher Education has chosen: Present a united front of state and university officials to make the pro-nickname case.By Tom Dennis for the Herald , March 31, 2011
Leila Olson, Grand Forks, letter: ‘The risk to UND appears to be too great’
Personally, I am in favor of the nickname and logo — but realistically, I cannot support the Legislature’s bill. I agree with the Herald’s March 12 editorial: 'The risk to UND appears to be too great.'

Rudolph Kleven, Alvarado, Minn., letter: Lawmakers should have left nickname alone
It’s sad that the North Dakota Legislature doesn’t know the meaning of the word 'no.' The lawmakers’ parents must have had a rough life raising these children who wouldn’t take no for an answer.

John Chaske and Eunice Davidson, Fort Totten, N.D., letter: Supposed ‘treaty’ never existed in the first place
The Spirit Lake and Standing Rock Sioux tribes did not ask to be in the NCAA and State Board of Higher Education agreement, nor did we have any say in the wording of the agreement. This was not in any way a treaty between the Sioux and the NCAA and North Dakota Board of Higher Education.
By John Chaske and Eunice Davidson , March 17, 2011
David Davidson, Sr., Devils Lake, N.D., letter: Herald should be part of nickname solution
Everybody who has been close to this issue knows that the Legislature now has listened to the majority of the voices of Standing Rock and Spirit Lake.
Everybody knows the name and logo will stay.
By David Davidson, Sr. , March 17, 2011
Donald Bruce Beard, Banning, Calif., letter: Trail of broken treaties runs through Bismarck
Would whites, true to their history, renege on a treaty, or would they keep their word and honor the wishes of a Sioux tribe?
