UND FOOTBALL: No more Mr. Nice Guys
Starting last spring, UND football coach Chris Mussman looked back at past seasons and pinpointed when the Sioux offense was the most productive. “It was when we were physical,” Mussman said. “That doesn’t mean we aren’t going to throw the ball, but we want to grind and wear teams out in the fourth quarter.” Sioux players went back to work on the tweaked offense Friday as UND participated in its first practice at Memorial Stadium.

Citing concerns expressed last week by leaders of the Big Sky Conference, which UND hopes to enter next year, the NCAA statement notes that the conference presidents’ position “is consistent with the spirit and intent of the settlement agreement the NCAA reached with the university to retire the nickname and logo.”

OUR OPINION: Lawmakers assumed responsibility for nickname
By passing a law forcing UND to keep the nickname, the Legislature and governor took responsibility for the issue. That means they now have a duty to minimize or eliminate any harm to UND. And that, in turn, means they should act to bring about a positive outcome rather than passively observing what happens next.

MATTERS AT HAND: NCAA sanctions will affect UND athlectic teams
UND will have to obey the new North Dakota law and live with NCAA sanctions. These include no home games in the post-season and no use of the nickname or logo at post-season games played elsewhere. The NCAA will also recommend that schools not in UND’s athletic conferences not schedule games with the Sioux.

The Spirit Lake and Standing Rock Sioux tribes did not ask to be in the NCAA and State Board of Higher Education agreement, nor did we have any say in the wording of the agreement. This was not in any way a treaty between the Sioux and the NCAA and North Dakota Board of Higher Education.
