Nickname appeal: NCAA used ‘cartel powers’ 
In their campaign earlier this year to persuade North Dakota voters to rally to UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname, proponents regularly argued that university leaders were exaggerating the potential harm that keeping the name and logo could do.

Dear Shirley, Joel Vig remembers UND as a beautiful little campus made up of ivy-covered buildings in the heart of Grand Forks. He graduated in 1976. Like multitudes of other UND alumni across the nation, Vig has sage comments on the shift being made away from the Sioux nickname. He thinks the slogan could be changed to the Fighting Sue.

Tribe quiet as ND voters scrap Fighting Sioux name
Voters statewide turned out in numbers not seen in a primary election for more than five decades, according to unofficial results, yet most members of the Standing Rock tribe took a pass. Sioux County, where much of the reservation is based, voted 184-159 to retire the University of North Dakota's nickname and Indian head logo.
