The foam-and-balsa-wood gizmo sitting idle in the offices of Otter Tail County isn’t exactly the spitting image of the sleek unmanned warplanes the word “drone” brings to mind. Its mission is to photograph drainage ditches, not enemy targets. At 6 pounds, it would be hard-pressed to take down a cow, let alone blow up a building.

Investigators say the 23-year-old man was driving east on Interstate 94 just before 10:15 p.m. Wednesday when he lost control of his vehicle and struck the side of a bridge. A snowplow driver who was driving by stopped to help the stranded motorist when deputies say the man attacked the plow driver, grabbing him by the traffic vest and trying to punch him.

Pelican Rapids man arrested in death of girlfriend's 5-month-old baby 
A Pelican Rapids man is charged with manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend's 5-month-old son. Thirty-year-old Pedro Mendoza remains in the Otter Tail County Jail. Unconditional bail is set at $300,000, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on Mendoza should he be released.

Man accused of using machete to kill mother indicted 
A Dalton, Minn., man accused of killing his mother with a machete has been indicted by a grand jury with a first-degree premeditated murder charge. James Francis Howard, 27, is accused of using an 18-inch machete to inflict head and hand injuries on 68-year-old Barbara Howard in April. She later died at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. The grand jury indictment was handed down Thursday in Otter Tail County.
